Craft Fair Philanthropy

As I continue to go through the files on my desktop, I found these gems. At the Christmas Craft Fair, many Churchill students (including some of our very own Rainbow Eggheads) sold crafts that they created. Even more incredible than that is that many students made crafts and sold them to help local and international charities.

Molly made lightboxes and sold them to raise money for CHEO.

Skye and her friend created pet profiles and sold them along with photos of animals to raise money for the Humane Society.
Clara sold bracelets to help UNICEF support people in the Philippines.

The kindness and creativity of Churchill students never ceases to amaze me!

WayBack Machine - Remember What You Want to Teach the World?

Welcome to the WayBack Machine. Today, we're going WAY back to the middle of September. Room 209 was hard at work building a great community that we are all now enjoying. One of the ways we built such a strong, supportive classroom community was through A LOT of discussion. One of our favourite kid heroes, Kid President inspired us once again this year.

After watching his 2013 Pep Talk for Teachers and Students, we answered the question "What do you want to teach the world?". Each student answered on the "What Stuck With You Today" board.

As always, I'm blown away by these awesome minds!

Enjoy your trip in the WayBack Machine to read what we were thinking about in September, 2013.

What do you want to teach the world?
Inspired by Kid President

-I want to teach the world how to be kind, generous and awesome!
-I want to teach the world is how hurting and killing an ocean or land animal is very wrong because some of these amazing creatures are so important and we need them to survive so without these amazing and precious animals, we will not exist!
-I want to teach the world music because music can help people to sometimes cope with stress and sometimes I need to work on that.
-I want to teach the world how much the environment does for us and I think it is really important that we help the environments so it can help us survive. Be grateful!
-I want to teach the world to cook.
-I want to teach the world that the world is fine how it is, it just needs eco-friendly stuff to save the world.
-I want to teach the world that a little perseverance will go far. It wasn’t long ago I was crying in the back cloak room because I thought I could not read. But that could not stop me. I persisted so much and tried so hard that now I can read to the best of my abilities.
-I want to teach the world to believe, because if you believe, you can do anything!
-I want to teach the world that you can feel good in your own skin, you can feel good about how you look, how you feel and even what you like. It’s OK if you don’t like the “popular music” or if you have different clothes, it’s how you feel that matters.
-I want to teach the world to ADD EGGS because I think it’s important everywhere, even out of the classroom.
-I want to teach the world that it’s OK to like what you like. Some people want to hide what they like if their friends don’t like it.
-I want to teach the world to be a better place. I think the world could be a better place if people started using ADD EGGS. I think if the world got more supportive (S in ADD EGGS), the world would be a much better place.
-I want to teach the world to respect the world, respect yourself, respect each other and respect this place.
-I want to teach the world about self-expression. You can express yourself in something like music, sports or writing. I’m thinking about starting a blog about cool people who self-express.
-I think that our class is teaching the world to be accountable, enthusiastic, grateful and supportive. We are also teaching the world that school can be fun.
-I’m trying to teach the world about women’s rights. I’ve already made a blog about it. And I think it’s a “hidden” topic. Girls are forced to marry men in different countries. It’s not a safe environment to talk about what’s really happening. I’d like to open the door of discussion about women’s rights.
-To me, we are not singlehandedly teaching. We are all working to give the world it’s happiness. We are all teaching and we all learn from each other.
-I want to teach the world not to litter and waste water.

Mood Boosters!

Some members of our classroom community have been having a tough time lately. As always, the Rainbow Eggheads have sprung into action and done what they can to boost people's moods. Check out the amazing projects the students of Room 209 whipped together for our friends!

Friday is the International Day of the Girl, Thursday, we'll Stand Up for Girls

Hello Rainbow Egg Heads,

Today in the computer lab, you are going to be doing some reading and watching.

#1. Read my blog post about International Day of the Girl and Stand Up for Girls from last year (there are three short videos to watch on there too).

#2. Read the post and comments that include our discussion about this from last year.

#3. Read the post and watch the video about what we did last year to Stand Up for Girls. Do you want to do this again today (since we won't be at school on Friday, the International Day of the Girl)?

#4. Write a comment on this post describing why you think some girls don't get to go to school in other parts of the world and finish this sentence: I stand up for....
Before hitting "post", double check what you have written for clarity and accuracy.
Success Criteria: thoughtful and juicy thoughts shared, full sentences, proper spelling/punctuation/grammar
Green Light Level response by one of your peers:
I think girls don't get to go to school because they are neglected by their society.
I stand up for... not letting girls be in poverty just because they're girls

#5. If you have not yet completed the "Stars and a Planet" task, click on this link to do so (many people used the QR code to get to this link).

#6. Follow step 3 on this post if you have not yet joined our Edmodo groups..

#7. Spend the remaining time doing your choice of IXL or TypingWeb.

Alex's Lemonade Stand - Family BBQ Version!

After watching the Alex's Lemonade Stand video as a class, several students jumped right into action!

Oceanna, Clara, Hannah, Kaleigh and Skye brought in supplies (lemons, lemonade, a pitcher, cups, a table cloth and signs) and they, as well as other Rainbow Egg Heads like Jackson and Kaleigh, got straight to work!

The lemonade sold out before the end of the Family BBQ and they raised more than $50! In addition to that, the students explained the cause eloquently and passionately to countless families. I was one impressed teacher!

What an amazing start to what is sure to be another thoughtful, philanthropic year!

Also, Skye had another fundraiser running at the same time for her Genius Hour project with Sharky and Kaitlyn, more info to come on that soon with a guest post from Skye!
The lemonade was a welcome, sweet treat on a beautiful, sunny evening!

Hannah, literally enjoying the fruits of her labour!

Oh yeah, after we sold out, we have a quick, fun Macarena Flash Mob!

A Great Push in the Food Drive!

Ray's class challenged the rest of the Junior students to think long and hard about ways to help others. After they visited all the other classes, we were totally inspired and brought in a huge amount of non-perishable food items! It was great to see everyone work together to help out another school in our board!

Pennies for Polio - by Liam

So we've got the idea for Pennies for Polio on google when we saw the penny and we decided to make a SMART ideas thing about Polio. We came up with good ideas. Because it was the last day of the pennies. Pennies aren't that important. And we decided to collect pennies for Polio. So Polio is a disease. It's only in four countries: Chad, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In all the other countries in the world, it's been cured! It takes sixty cents to make one kid better!

Thank you for listening.

Digital Learning Day - February 6th

This Wednesday is Digital Learning Day. We do at least a bit of digital learning every day. This Wednesday, how will we celebrate and commemorate our digital learning and help to encourage others to learn digitally?

Should we sign up for this Flat Classroom project - A Week in the Life? We would get to collaborate with other classes and create VoiceThreads and wikis about daily life in Ottawa. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can see links to previous years' projects. Should we sign up the the Life Round Here project? We would create at least one video about our lives to share online.

I Have an Awesome Idea...Do You?

Check out Project Awesome. They give out $1000 grants to Awesome Projects. I have some ideas for some Awesome Projects. The ones I've thought of so far have to do with technology and our Fielding Friends...I'm thinking!

I want you to get thinking, too! What could we apply to Project Awesome for?

Pat and Hunter's Philanthropy by Pat and Hunter

The point of our philanthrophy (for those of you who don't know, that means fundraising for charity) was to raise $235 for UNICEF to buy a School-in-a-Box, which contains the basic needs and supplies for a classroom in a developing country. - by Pat

We were inspired by a little magazine that came to my doorstep once upon a time. The poor little magazine, out in the cold. So we decided to take it inside and read it. Pat came by the next day and I thought Pat and I would make a good team to sell hot chocolate. So, we set up a little hot chocolate stand in the intersection of Beech and Champagne, really close to my house and we sold the hot chocolate for as much as you wanted to donate. Gabby dropped by and gave us some baked goods. Thanks to Gabby, we got some extra money. In the end, we passed the total by two dollars, precisely! - by Hunter

Here we are, sitting out in the cold. We played with Matt, Shauna's husband, he plays in a band called The Royal Condition. - Hunter.
Me, freezing my hands off, trying to play ukulele. And I'm surprised I have my fingers to this day.  - Pat

That's our sign I made out of a cardboard box I found in a recycling bin. And it's my mom in the picture. - Hunter

Still playing, freezing my hands. - Pat

Yay! Camden dropped by. As soon as we closed up! We had been open for three hours. - Hunter

Us standing, still freezing our hands off, and Sadie came. And she was all full of joy after watching a movie at home. - Pat

My mom and I were at home and we just found the time to take my Blackberry and turn it on and go on the UNICEF website and poured all the money out of the Zip-Lock bag after we counted it all up, and then we BOUGHT IT! We bought the School-in-a-Box. - Hunter

Thanks to the inspiring work of Pat and Hunter, a group of students in a developing country now have the resources to go to school! AMAZING!

The Food Bank - by Millie

There's this thing going on at the school and it's called the Food Bank Drive and you give canned foods and dry foods that don't need to be kept in a fridge and once you get enough food you give it to the Food Bank and they give it to people who can't afford to buy their own food.

We are doing this because there are people who can't afford to buy their own food and it's not fair that they don't get to eat. And we should help them out with the Food Bank.

And the goal that Megan has for the school is 800 lbs of food! And we only have 50 lbs so far.

Imagine if you didn't have enough money to buy your own food and you didn't have food and there were people who had a lot of money. Wouldn't it be better if they shared the food? So please donate to the Food Drive.
