ECLIPSE by Yaro, Larry, and Johnny

This year in room 209 one of our literacy programs is called ECLIPSE. It stands for :
E-Engaged
C-Choice
L-Literacy
I-Independent
P-Purposeful
S-Stamina
E-Eggucational (Educational)

There are three ways of doing ECLIPSE: Read to Self (where you read to yourself), Read to Eachother (where you read to a partner), and Work on Writing (where you write a story).
When you start ECLIPSE you pick someone to do a good example and a bad example. A good example is where you are sitting quietly with your book in your hand and your book bin (which is a bin with books that you want to read in it) beside you. A bad example is when you are talking loudly and you are out of your seat and not paying attention to your book. After, you go to your seat and get out your book or writing journal. You set a timer for a little while like about 5 minutes to start and every time you go for a bit more time. You are not alowed to talk though. If you talk you stop and record the time you did.
In read to a partner there are four ways to read to a partner: I read you read (where you take turns reading), choral reading (where you read at the same time), read 1 book, read different books.

ECLIPSE is really good for building your stamina for reading and writing quietly.

A Paramedic Met a Degu When Nils Fainted

Last week, we had two paramedics in our classroom. We'll post more about the story later (unless the student involved wants to leave the story as a comment and I'll add to this post!). They'd never heard of degus and thought we made them up.

One of them was so interested in the boys that he had a little snuggle with him!

After they helped in our classroom, they were given Project Thank you cards and have already started to spread them!

When Nils Fainted - by Nils
First I went to hold a Degu then it bit me and I started bleeding so went to the sink and started to wash my finger and then I started to feel a little dizzy and after about half a minute I was lying on the floor and Shauna woke me up and got me a pillow to lie on. Then the paramedics came and checked me out they got project thank-you cards and one of them held a Degu then I went to my family doctor and said I looked good. Then I went home and had a little rest.

Now, it's 5 days later, and Nils feels totally normal! Thank goodness!

The class stayed very calm and collected even though it was a stressful situation. We were mindful and made sure that, despite our amygdalas firing off, we stayed mindful and used our pre-frontal cortexes to deal with the issue calmly.

Jackson at the Terry Fox Memorial by Jackson

What happened was that me and my dad were on a motorcycle trip and he wanted to see this and we stopped and I saw it. So we stopped and took a picture. It's the Terry Fox Memorial, I don't remember where it was. It's 'cause it's where Terry Fox stopped, I think.

Trip to the Civilization Museum - by Fiona

On Monday our class and Owen's class went on a field trip together to the Civilization Museum. At the museum we got to do 2 different workshops, Operation Pyramid and Music Works. We were split into 2 different groups, one group told a story from Nigeria and the other group played a bunch of different instruments from Indonesia. At the end of the day we got a chance to walk around the museum with a group and look at some different exhibits. My group went to the Grand hall to have a look at all the totem polls. When we were looking at a piece of art a guard came over to tell us a little but about the wall. He said it was part of an old house. We learned a really interesting fact. We learned how they made the red paint. The women would have to chew salmon eggs and then put it on the wall an that would be the colouring. The red paint was also used as a varnish, interesting fact, right?

Poetry Club--Fiona

Every Monday we have poetry club. In poetry club we write poems and we listen to each others poems. Right now we are watching the lip dub our class made to get inspired to write some poetry and do an activity. Today is Music Monday so we are doing poetry on music, mostly on ISS ( Is Somebody Singing ). Right now we are thinking of doing a poetry club lip dub to Belly Breathe since it is Music Monday.
