Hello boys and girls,
I just signed us up for World Read Aloud Day! It is on March 6th, 2013.
Remember when we did Stand Up for Girls? I learned about that day through LitWorld, the organization that coordinates that even. They also coordinate World Read Aloud Day!
How do you think we should celebrate? Maybe we could do Random Acts of Reading Aloud (RARA) and take things we've written (poems, short stories, awesome metaphors, etc) to share around the school. Maybe we should contact an author to read aloud to us via Skype! What are your ideas?
Welcome to the home of the Rainbow Eggheads, formerly the home of the Digital Degus. A class of grade 5/6 students and their teacher blog about their learning adventures here. We tweet as a class from @churchill209 Our teacher tweets from @misspollock

International Day of the Girl is Tomorrow
Hello boys and girls,
Today in the computer lab, you have a task to complete.
Tomorrow, Thursday, October 11th, 2012, is the first ever International Day of the Girl! We wil be celebrating by Standing Up for Girls in the morning.
What will you be thinking about? Why will you be standing up for girls?
Respond to this post with at least three sentences about what you have learned about from the videos on this blog and our discussions in class. Tell us why you think it's important to have an International Day of the Girl. Tell us why we need to bring awareness to other people around the world about the rights of all children and how we can spread that message.
Your response could be in sentences, a poem, a letter, a rap, or another creative method of your choosing!
Please read your classmates' responses, too. Feel free to respond to them and ask questions. Remember to be respectful in the way that you write.
I look forward to Standing Up for Girls with you tomorrow!
As per Pat's request, you can visit the link for LitWorld, the organization that is in charge of Stand Up for Girls.

Get Ready to Stand Up for Girls
In Canada, boys and girls are mostly given the same opportunities. It doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl; you are allowed to go to school, to learn to read and write (this is called being "literate"), you look forward to growing up, having a job, and maybe having a family one day.
However, not all places in the world are like this. In fact, there are many places where girls are not given the same chances as boys. For many reasons, there are more than 523 000 000 girls and women around the world who cannot read and write!
(Try to read that big number out loud - 523 000 000.)
On 10-11-12 (What is that date?), the first EVER International Day of the Girl, our class will be joining Stand Up for Girls. We will literally stand up for the rights of girls around the world. We will try to do as many activities in class as possible standing. We will even take a photo of us doing that and post it on our blog.
Do you think that every child, regardless of gender, deserves a right to a quality education? I do.
By learning to read and write, all girls in the world can protect themselves agains poverty, poor health outcomes and lifelong struggles. Literacy is a cruicial skill.
Read the information above and watch the videos posted and post a comment below telling me WHY you think some girls DON'T get to go to school in other parts of the world.
