Kiva Candidates!
Time to vote! Fill out your "Kiva Vote" sheet in the computer lab!
Update:
Votes are coming in! I'll tally them here:
(If you voted to give $25 to a person, that counts as one vote, if you voted to give $50, that counts as two, if you voted to give $75, that counts as three!)
Fares: 7
Fidelia: 6
John: 8
Khat: 13
Loreto: 13
Stella: 10
Update #2:
We did it! At the VERY last minute on Monday, we counted up the votes. Khat, Loreto and Stella got the most votes from Room 209 and each recieved a $25 loan from us! It was EXTREMELY exciting! We all cheered!
Check it out! If anyone else makes a loan using this link, we get an extra $25 to loan!
Also, I realized that we can leave comments for our borrowers. Let's do that later this week!

Kiva Candidates
Hi boys and girls,
You have a simple assignment today, but you have to put a lot of thought and care into it.
Select a candidate for our Kiva donation. Write a comment on this post, link to that Kiva candate's page, include three compelling reasons why you've chosen that person (think back to our discussion in class). Your reasons should be at least three sentences total and use Writer's Workshop tools.
If you have trouble creating the link to the candidate's page, just remember to copy the address on that specific page and paste it into your comment! Camden, Fiona, Gabby and Millie are all tech experts and can help!
Some ideas: consider the candidate's gender, age, home country, type of business, personal story, whether he or she has a family or is single, how much money he or she is asking for, how much more money he or she needs, etc.
Post with your name. We will vote later this week or early next week. We will split our $75 up in a way that we feel is fair.
When you are done, you may play Free Rice, read Teach Kids News or read about the 14 most inspirational kids. You can even leave a comment about the 14 inspirational kids and let me know which one you'd like to do a news story about!
Have fun and be good for Geoff. He'll be looking forward to learning about how great you are on the blog!
I will miss you this afternoon! Have fun and I can't wait to read what you've all written and see who you've chosen! I wonder if any of you will select the same candidates!?

Observations About Kiva - Computer Lab Assignment
Welcome to the computer lab, boys and girls,
Today your task is going to be related to Kiva. You will explore Kiva's website and learn more about how we can support somone in a developing country by helping to fund a microloan. Then you will communicate what you have learned to your peers here on the blog.
Step 1: Explore a New Website - Please visit the Kiva website.
Step 2: Gather Information - While on the website, use your critical reading skills (Ask questions, Make Connections, Visualize, Synthesize, Observe and Infer) and soak up as much information as you can.
Step 3: Share Information - Come back to the blog and leave a comment telling your classmates TWO juicy pieces of information that you have learned about Kiva or microlending. Use some of your Writer's Workshop tools (Tell It All, Say What You Mean, Put Muscles in Your Verbs, Invigorate Your Verbs and/or Paint Vivid Word Pictures) to help make your writing interesting to your readers.
Step 4: Continue the Conversation - Read some your classmates comments and make at least ONE positive, constructive response.
Remember:
-Spelling IS important. Double check using a spellchecker on a word processor or the Class Dictionary Box.
-Be constructive, kind and supportive in the comments you write to your peers

Kiva Loans - photos by Melodee
Inspired by Tiiu's class, we had a great discussion about the Micro-loan website, Kiva, today.
Tiiu's grade 6s are writing essays to try to persuade their classmates to loan money to one of three borrowers on Kiva. We talked about some of the reasons you might choose to loan one person money over another person. Then, I showed the students in Room 209 the five loans I have given on Kiva.
Students in Room 209 took four sticky notes, each one representing $25, and voted on who they thought most deserved the $100 that Tiiu's class plans to loan. I wonder if Tiiu's class will vote the same way we did.
We were so inspired that Room 209 has decided to fundraise and will make a loan of our own next week! We now have a "Kiva donations box" in our classroom thanks to Pat's crafting skills!
