Scientists in the Schools- Forces and Structures with Toni! - by Millie
Today we are doing Scientists in the School with Toni! She is teaching us about forces and structures! We are about to be building a structure out of straws and tape. Right now we are brainstorming for ideas of what we are going to build.

Laurie's Second Guatemala Presentation
The much anticipated hearing aid fitting presentation video above was filmed by Jackson. The Digital Degus got a big kick out of watching my mom fit me with a hearing aid mold like she did to patients in Guatemala. I particularly enjoy Thomas' face as he carefully works on getting the mixture consistent!

Arts Electives: Poetry Slam - by Laryssa
For one of the Art Electives this year, we did a Poetry Slam with Shauna. She's really good at poetry, and we had one of her former students come in. Her name is Hannah. There were mostly girls, and only three boys! Since Electives was on the same day as Pajama Day, we were all in our pajamas except the few people who decided not to celebrate pajama day.
How we did our Poetry Slam, was everyone thought up a word and then wrote it on a piece of paper and we put it in a bin then we passed it around the circle and then we each took out a piece of paper. Surprisingly, I picked the same word that I put in the box, "sheep". I chose sheep because I was thinking of sheep a lot that day because my pajamas were covered in sheep. If you're wondering, those things covering my pajamas are not clouds!
We each got a minute to write anything we wanted on our poem, then Shauna would ring a bell and we'd pass it to the person on my left. The person on my left was Hannah, the person on my right, who I got the poem from, was Clara. I chose to sit there.
At the end, when we were really running out of time, we could stand up and read the poem we were currently holding. I was holding a poem called, "People". Clara is really shy and she decided not to read hers. We had to stop halfway, at Shauna, so Shauna did not get to perform "Sheep". I have a very good memory. I was very mad we had to stop there cause I wanted to hear what my poem ended up as.
At the end of the Elective, Bella and her friend volunteered to type up all the poems and email them to Shauan. After the winter holidays, everyone who was in the elective got a copy of the book. The cover was a Wordle of all the names of the people who were in the Poetry Slam and the word "Poetry Slam". We also got to keep four for the class because we had extras!
My favourite poem is "Sheep". It's not just because it was my poem, it's mostly because I like how the words went together and the ideas changed and it's still smooth!

Ania's Presentation - CIDA
Liam's mom Ania, kindly came into our class to talk to us about her work with CIDA and share the Development Map with us. Our discussion was very rich and I was really proud of the way the students listened to Ania, answered her questions thoughtfully and asked some great questions of their own.
The ideas that Ania shared tied into a lot of the concepts that we have been talking about in class. We spoke about literacy, gender inequality, the differences between developed and developing countries, how kids like us can help to change the world, microloans and many other topics. The students were very engaged and we learned a lot from Ania!
At the end of her presentation. Ania gave each student a bookmark, a Development Map and a globe stress ball to take home.
Thank you so much to Ania for coming in and sharing her expertise with us!

Bal and Rachel - Canada World Youth - by Kaleigh
Hello peoples,
Bal and Rachel work with Canada World Youth and Gabby and Gabby's mom took them in. So, when they came into our class they told us about the Canada World Youth and I liked it because they were from different countries and they did so many different things. But sometimes I couldn't understand Rachel because Rachel was talking not so loud. She comes from Kenya, she speaks four languages: English, German, Swahili another native Kenyan language, I forget the name. Bal lives in Vancouver. My mom's dad (aka my grandpa) comes from Vancouver too. Bal is good at cooking chapati, which is from India. Once Gabi's mom came from a spa, and they got home at around 10 and there was a whole kitchen of people that Bal and Rachel invited, it was funny.
I liked meeting someone from Vancouver and Africa. Bal is from India originallly but she was born in Canada, her background is Indian. And we gave them Project Thank-You cards. We hope that it spreads all around the world and they bring it to Kenya. They are going to Kenya today, but they are stopping in London today!

Jill's Farming Presentation
Jack's mom, Jill, came in to our class to tell us about her experiences visiting different farms. She told us about a commercial corn farm, a large local tomato farm, and a small local cranberry farm. We all learned a lot from her excellent presentation! We even got to taste some fresh, delicious cherry tomatoes and some bitter, sugar-free cranberry juice!
Thanks, Jill, for sharing your knowledge with us!

The Animal Meeting
This week, we had a guest come in to our classroom. Lori from Gatineau Park came and led a meeting of the animals that live in Gatineau Park. She represented the mediator of the meeting and played the role of the fisher. It was a very interactive presentation in which each student got to "become" a wild animal and share what his or her needs are. We got a great perspective on wild animals by taking on their voices and now, more than ever, want to make sure to help protect real animals in the wild.
Lori encouraged all of us to visit Gatineau Park. It's open to the public all the seasons of the year and some students in our class have never been there!

As always, we had LOTS we wanted to share with Lori, but she had even more to share with us! We learned a lot about conservation and protection of animals in the wild.
Each student had a choice between 2 animals to represent.
The animals all introduced themselves to one another.
Guess what animal Madi was....
You got it...a beaver!

The animals all introduced themselves at the meeting in their own animal languages. It was pretty cute.
Lori Bennett has a website about her farm, and the programs she runs with her horses. Check it out!
